Etnografía, política y poder: José Martí y los indígenas norteamericanos

Jorge Camacho

ABSTRACT

In the following article I explore the question of Indian mistreatment and assimilation in José Martí’s writings. I point out the similarities between his arguments and those held by the “Friends of Indian” organization, which tried to improve the natives’ lives and also lobbied for their assimilation.  Hence, I will take into consideration both sides of the issue, as I question Martí’s validity in using certain rhetorical devices such as allegory and methaphor, that both grants a voice to the natives but also compares them to children.
